As we transition from a 'hunter-gatherer' economy to a manufacturing economy, it is important that everyone understand the numbers and scale of effort required to sustain profitable production.  Here are some details regarding the manufacture of battleships for sale to Alliance members, and to the market in Dodixie.

Making and selling EVE ships from the materials refined from raw ore will always be more profitable than selling the ore itself.  Conversely, the ore and materials we use to manufacture are not "free"; by using them, we give up the revenue we would otherwise have gained by selling them and keeping the isk.  It is the difference between the sale price of the raw materials and the sale price of the finished product (minus manufacturing costs) that constitutes our profit.

For the following breakdown of battleship material prices, sale prices and profit, we will use sales history from the market in Dodixie for all items.  As of this writing, here is the median "buy" price for Minerals:

  Mineral   Dodixie "Buy" Price
Isogen 49.50
Megacyte 3,907.00
Mexallon 24.50
Nocxium 74.08
Pyerite 3.48
Tritanium 3.91
Zydrine 1,601.04

Mining and selling the amount of minerals necessary to create even one battleship will cause a small drop in the price of that mineral on the local market, due to increased supply.  So the prices above are the best possible prices that could be obtained for large amounts of ore sold on the market, and are likely to be lower.  Subsequently, the greater profit from manufacturing is increased by an even greater degree, since we are not flooding the market with our minerals at a reduced sale price.  Also, by not selling minerals, we are depriving our manufacturing competition of important commodities.

Using the above mineral prices and the requirements for the manufacture of each battleship from a moderately-researched blueprint (better research means more efficiency), below is a comparison of the profitability of a selection of ships:

Ship  Mineral sale price Ship sale price Profit Vol/month
Abaddon 123,348,008.36  156,000,000.00  30,651,991,64  17-20
Apocalypse 78,062,978.32  91,000,000.00  12,937,021.68  22-24
Armageddon 45,373,813.13  52,750,000.00  7,376,186.87  30-34
Dominix 43,489,786.08  50,000,000.00  6,510,213.92  50-60
Hyperion 124,324,022.24  141,000,000.00  16,675,977,76  22-24
Maelstrom 103,237,551.83  133,000,000.00  29,762,448.17  10
Megathron 73,738,370.05  82,300,000.00  8,561,629.95  30-32
Raven 76,147,311.38  86,000,000.00  9,852,688.62  65-70
Rokh 113,285,244.26  130,000,000.00  16,714,755.74  12-15
Scorpion 50,757,316.23  57,300,000.00  6,542,683.77  18-21
Typhoon 52,171,630.70  60,000,000.00  7,828,369.30  8-10

Using these numbers and a visit to the Dodixie market, we can see which ships are currently in demand, and have a good idea of how many will sell in a week's or month's time, based on the sales volume from previous months.

By looking at the volume of minerals necessary and, by extension, the ore needed to obtain it, we can begin to set some mining goals that will contribute to our manufacturing effort in a substantial and predictable manner.
